UK: DIRECT LINE INCREASES SALES VIA THE INTERNET

Direct Line, the non-life insurance arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland, has revealed that it has increased its sales by an estimated 8% through its online operation, directline.com. The company claims to have taken some 30% of the online insurance market since it was launched nine months ago, and in the online car insurance market it has achieved a 40% share. Direct Line has issued an average of 150,000 quotes each month since it was launched, and some 40% of these were issued outside of normal business hours. Around 30% of those completing the transaction do so over the Internet, whilst the rest prefer to switch to the telephone call centre to complete their deal.

UK: NEW GB[pound] 13MN INITIATIVE TO CUT CRIME

A GB[pound] 13mn scheme known as the Youth Inclusion Programme will target 47 major areas of crime, hoping driving down their overall crime rates by 30% in two years. In each area the 50 worst offenders aged between 13 and 16 will be picked out and targeted with the aim of cutting their arrest rates by 60% over the same period. Research has shown that 3% of criminals carry out a quarter of overall crime. It is hoped that the scheme will also help cut truancy levels by 33% in the coming two years in the affected areas. The youngsters concerned will be offered literacy and numeracy classes, plus after-school activities and vocational training. They will also be helped to fight drug and alcohol abuse.

UK football clubs are beginning to offer branded household and motor insurance. This allows fans to support their club, and creates no costs for the club, which also gains free marketing. If this approach proves successful, then football clubs are likely to begin offering a wider range of financial products. This trend is being driven by Direct Club Insurance Services, an insurance broking concern headed by Phil Zeidler. It has seen growing interest from Premiership and First Division clubs.
